SKANEATELES
BEFORE DRONES and DIGITAL CAMERAS
In 2019, Rob Gregory was converting his 35mm film photos to a digital format. The majority of these photos were taken from his restored WWII airplane and go back to the 1950s. They include the 1972 Winkelman plane crash, the 1988-1989 low lake level, the 1991 Skaneateles Country Club fire, the 1995 Antique Boat Show, and the 50th Anniversary of the Lightning sailboat in 1988. Before putting the photos away, he thought that they are really part of Skaneateles history and should be in a picture book. So, he met with Jorge and Beth Batlle of The Skaneateles Historical Society to confirm his idea. He has put together his book entitled “SKANEATELES”, “Before Drones and Digital Cameras”. It is a spiral bound picture book that contains two hundred sixteen 8.5"x11" color photos, many of which are yesterday and today photo comparisons. The picture on the cover of this issue of the “ Neighbors of SKANEATELES” is the last page in the book and was taken on July 4th at 32 East Genesee St. “SKANEATELES” is only available through the Skaneateles Historical Society, which receives 100% of the profits. Rob also has a picture book, the “REBIRTH OF N68304” which is the story of the restoration of his 1943 Piper L4 airplane. It covers the adventure of transporting the L4 “basket case” from Trenton, New Jersey back to Skaneateles on a boat trailer. The fuselage was on the trailer with the wings stacked on either side and the engine in the car’s trunk. When home, the airplane was put in the basement of his house where the all of the restoration was done. This history is covered as well as the history of the L4 in WWII and as the civilian Piper Cub. Another picture book is the story of how he became one of only three people in the world, as far as he knows, to sit in the cockpit of “The World’s Smallest Airplane” (now “The World’s Smallest Low Wing Airplane”) and his relationship over the years with Raymond Stits, the designer and builder of the Stits Jr.
